Music inspired by the ineffable and the divine | Christopher Theofanidis’ work from Visions and Miracles is taken from the words of Timothy Leary and inspired by Spanish medieval music. Sufjan Steven’s wordless song cycle is an “aural environment” for the animals of the Chinese zodiac arranged for string orchestra by Michael P. Atkinson. Clarice Assad’s Dreamscapes is a dazzling meditation on the workings of the unconscious mind featuring violinist Stephanie Zyzak; Stacy Garrop’s Lo Yisa Goy is a wordless utterance of the Hebrew prayer for peace. The program concludes with Adolphus Hailstork’s “Church Sonata,” inspired by the composer's fascination with cathedrals.
